Flora and Forna

The dramatic coastline and mild climate of the Lizard make it one of the best places in Cornwall to experience nature. Keep your eyes peeled for grey seals basking on the rocks, listen for the distinctive call of the red-billed chough overhead, or spend an afternoon wandering through beautiful subtropical gardens. Here are a few places we think are well worth discovering.

Seal Spotting

One of the joys of visiting the Lizard is how often you encounter wildlife without really trying. Grey seals are regular visitors along this stretch of coastline, and we've lost count of the number of times we've spotted them while walking to Lizard Point or peering down into Polpeor Cove. Keep an eye on the water around Housel Bay too—you never know what might appear.

Cornish Seal Sanctuary

If you're visiting with children - or simply love animals - the Cornish Seal Sanctuary makes a wonderful afternoon out in nearby Gweek. As well as rescued grey seals, you'll find sea lions, otters, penguins and woodland walks. Autumn is an especially rewarding time to visit, when many orphaned

Choughs

Keep an eye on the clifftops for choughs, Cornwall's iconic red-billed birds. Once extinct in Cornwall, they've made a remarkable return and are often seen around Lizard Point.

Trebah Garden

Around 45 minutes from Pebbles, Trebah is one of Cornwall's most spectacular subtropical gardens. Winding paths lead through lush exotic planting, giant tree ferns and colourful seasonal displays before descending to Polgwidden Cove, the garden's own secluded beach on the Helford River. It's the perfect place to pause for a picnic, paddle or even a swim before making the gentle climb back through the garden. If you're visiting the Helford, we'd highly recommend making time for Trebah.
