Food is one of the great pleasures of staying on the Lizard. There is something about this part of the world where the food is deeply connected to place. Some of my favourite places to eat in the UK are in the Lizard Whilst some are truly special places to visit - a destination in their own right, some of our favourite meals have also been wonderfully simple - an Ann's pasty overlooking the sea, coffee after an early morning swim or fish and chips eaten straight from the paper on a harbour wall. Others have become annual traditions that we look forward to every visit.

Village Favourites

There are plenty of places to eat and drink just a short stroll from Pebbles. The village has two welcoming pubs - The Top House and The Witchball. Coast, is open whatever the weather. The family who run Coast get their fish from Cadgwith (check out the BBC this fishing Life, Nigel is the father of the owner.  We particularly recommend their crab sandwich or vegan Buddha bowl after a morning on the coast path. 

You'll also find several ice cream shops, a traditional fish and chip shop and the locally famous Ann's Pasties, which have been made in the village for generations and are renowned throughout Cornwall. Originally baked in the little yellow house on Beacon Terrace, you'll now find the bakery on The Green.

None of these places are fancy, and that's exactly why we love them. They're relaxed, welcoming and full of locals—a perfect reflection of village life on the Lizard.

Our absolute fave is Ellie's Soul Kitchen. Operating from a beautiful pastel pink caravan in a field just before the Kynance Cove car park, Ellie spends the winter travelling the world before returning each spring with fresh inspiration for her menus. Her food combines global flavours with exceptional local produce, and every dish feels thoughtfully prepared.

There really is nothing better than sitting on a china plate in a field overlooking Kynance, wrapped up in a dry robe and woolly hat with a cold beer in hand - feels wonderfully simple - and completely unforgettable.

Food with a View

For a memorable lunch or dinner, we always recommend The Terrace restaurant at Housel Bay Hotel, around a 15-minute walk from Pebbles along the coast path. Perched high above the bay, it enjoys one of the most spectacular dining settings on the Lizard. Whether you're stopping for lunch, dinner or simply a drink, it's a wonderful place to sit back and watch the ever-changing colours of the Atlantic.

If you're celebrating something special, treat yourself to a bottle of the local Polgoon Sparkling Pinot Noir Rosé and linger a little longer as the sun begins to sink over the horizon.

For something a little more relaxed, Wave Crest Café at Lizard Point is one of our favourite hidden gems. Tucked just away from the bustle of the lighthouse, it serves excellent, simple food—think freshly made sandwiches, generously filled jacket potatoes, local beers and Cornish ice cream. It's the perfect place to refuel after exploring Lizard Point or walking the coast path.

Pebbles Pick

Walk to Housel Bay Hotel for dinner and time your meal to coincide with sunset. Afterwards, wander back to Pebbles under the stars. Thanks to the Lizard's exceptionally dark skies, it's often a wonderful place for stargazing. Tip - book in advance to avoid disappointment as they can be quite booked up with guests staying at the hotel. 

 

Worth the Drive

Some places are simply worth getting in the car for. Flora at New Yard is one of our favourite brunch spots, serving exceptional coffee, pastries and bagels in beautifully restored stables. Nearby, Potager Garden feels like a hidden retreat, with its greenhouse café surrounded by inspiring gardens. Either makes the perfect stop before or after a visit to Trebah Garden or Helford Passage.​​

Porthleven is a real foodie's destination and somewhere we return to time and again. Our favourite place for a sundowner is The Mussel Shoal. Grab a drink, order the chowder and the dirty fries, and watch the harbour come to life as the evening draws in. Visiting with children? Bring a crabbing bucket, line and a little bait. When the tide is high, the harbour wall is one of our favourite places to catch crabs while the grown-ups enjoy a well-earned drink.

Roskilly's is a family favourite and somewhere we return to time and again. Set on a working organic farm, it's worth allowing a little extra time to wander around and meet the friendly farm animals before settling down for something to eat. Their stone-baked pizzas are some of the best we've tasted, with wonderfully inventive flavour combinations using local Cornish ingredients. If there's a pizza featuring local Cornish honey, don't hesitate—the honey is produced just a stone's throw from Pebbles. Before you leave, treat yourself to one of Roskilly's legendary ice creams, which have become something of a Cornish institution.

A Slice of Cornwall is one of those places we'd happily drive a little further for. Tucked away on the Helford, it's relaxed, welcoming and serves beautifully prepared food in a lovely setting. Whether you're after brunch, lunch or simply coffee and cake, there's something for everyone. Our girls always head straight for the waffles, while we're usually tempted by one of the seasonal specials and a really good coffee.
